Calaveras Dam Replacement Project

Description

Project is an element of the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project and includes three modifications to the existing Alameda Creek diversion Dam necessary to provide upstream and downstream passage for steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in the event a future restored population of steelhead returns to Alameda Creek. The project footprint is 22.93 acres and includes a portion of the Alameda Creek stream channel, adjacent upland habitats, the existing ACDD and Alameda Creek Diversion Tunnel structures, and existing roadways and buildings. Project activities include grading and excavation of the Project site, trench digging, road construction/modifications, tree removal, and other activities. Project will result in impacts to 13.64 acres of CA tiger salamander (Ambystoma californiense) and Alameda whipsnake (Masticophis lateralis euryxanthus) habitat, including temporary impacts to 1.11 acres; the Project will permanently remove 1.2 acres and semi-permanently remove 11.33 acres of habitat. Of these total impacts, 0.66 acres of impacts (0.13 acres of permanent and 0.53 acres of semi-permanent) in Alameda Creek are considered Alameda whipsnake habitat only. Therefore, impacts to CA tiger salamander habitat include 2.72 acres of permanent loss, and 9.1 acres of semi-permanent loss. Impacts to foothill yellow-legged frog habitat include 0.17 acres of permanent loss and 0.56 acres of permanent loss. The project is expected to result in incidental take of CA tiger salamander and Alameda whipsnake, as well as foothill yellow-legged frogs, (Rana boylii), which are candidates for listing under CESA. The ITP Amendment 1 referenced above, as issued by CDFW, authorizes incidental take of foothill yellow-legged frogs listed as a candidate species under CESA that may occur as a result of Project implementation.
