Title
Bijou Park Creek Watershed Restoration Project
Description
The Bijou Park Creek Watershed is an approximately 850-acre watershed that extends from Heavenly Mountain Resort (California Base Lodge) in the upper watershed down to the connection to Lake Tahoe at the Ski Run Marina, encompassing upper Ski Run Boulevard, residential neighborhoods along Glenwood and Blackwood Avenues, and the Bijou Elementary School. The natural watershed has been significantly altered with the construction of the Heavenly California base lodge and parking lot, residential and commercial development between Pioneer Trail and Highway 50, and the creation of the Ski Run Marina at the terminus of the watershed. Urban development within stream environment zone (SEZ) areas has exacerbated localized flooding issues. The Project includes a series of stormwater and SEZ restoration improvements that would be constructed throughout the eastern portion of the City of South Lake Tahoe. The project includes restoration activities in two sections of Bijou Park Creek and various stormwater conveyance and treatment upgrades to achieve the Project objectives of improving water quality, reducing nuisance flooding, and restoring function of the Bijou Park Creek SEZ. The Project has been designed to address pollutant loading in urban runoff, including fine sediment particles and nutrients, that contributes to the impairment of Lake Tahoe’s clarity and must be reduced in accordance with the Lake Tahoe Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) program.
