- Title
- Eureka Bulk Terminal Phytoremediation
- Description
- CBE, LLC proposes to plant up to 550 trees at the Eureka Bulk Terminal as part of the site remediation project to remove petroleum hydrocarbons from soil and groundwater at the site. The trees will be planted in existing paved portions of the site in patented proprietary TreeWell® Systems, which direct the roots to grow into the shall groundwater table rather than just below the soil surface. The contractor that is selected to implement the phytoremediation plan will be trained and authorized to work with hazardous materials. Prior to conducting any ground disturbing activities, CBE, LLC will provide the contractor with a copy of SHN's Soil and Groundwater Management Contingency Plan (SHN, 2006). To provide access to the northwestern portion of the site, a new roadway will be constructed. Once the phytoremediation system is established and in operation, the existing dual phase extraction system will be turned off. The phytoremediation system will be removed from the site upon a determination by the California Regional Water Quality Control Board, North Coast Region (RWQCB) that the system has achieved remediation goals, which is expected to take 5 to 20 years. With that determination, the trees will be removed and the site will be restored to pre-project conditions for continuation of Coastal Dependent Industrial uses.
