Document Description
Allow access to China Camp State Park as part of the Mammoth March special event planned for October 2023. As many as 600 hikers/participants will hike at their own pace along an approximately 20-mile route, with part of the proposed route located within China Camp State Park. To ensure a remote hiking experience, participants will begin the hike in “wave starts,” with small groups starting at approximately 30 second intervals. The hike will begin at the Marin County Fairground, making its way through Harry A. Barbieri Memorial Park until they reach the boundary of China Camp State Park. Within China Camp State Park, hikers will follow the Ridge Fire Trail to the Oak Ridge Trail, then continue north to Shoreline Trail and walk Shoreline Trail for about four miles, traveling around the Back Ranch Meadows Campground. From there participants will travel along the Bay View Trail to reconnect to Ridge Fire Trail, which they will follow until they reach San Pedro Ridge Fire Road. Hikers will follow San Pedro Ridge Fire Road to exit China Camp State Park, once again cross through Harry A. Barbieri Memorial Park ending back at the Marin County Fairground. Three (3) aid stations are proposed at various locations within China Camp State Park. The first will be located along Oak Ridge Trail near the Ranger Station near Bullhead Flat. The second will be located at the Back Ranch Meadow Campground and the third will be located at the intersection of Ridge Fire Trail and San Pedro Ridge Fire Road. Aid stations will include temporary fixtures such as “pop-up” shade structures and foldable tables and chairs. The hike will take place on a Saturday; however, set up will begin as early as the Wednesday prior. Set up will include the placement of directional signage throughout the course. Signs will either be attached to existing infrastructure such as existing trail markers and trees (using zip ties) or placed on sandwich board-type signs. Signs will be removed the Sunday following the event.
