Document Description
The Annual "Live Fire" Safety Training exercise prepare County of Los Angeles Fire Department personnel in all aspects of safe and effective use of fire suppression tactics in preparation of the upcoming fire season. The total project area is 93 acres of County owned land adjacent to the Wayside Honor Rancho/Pitchess Detention Center. Training exercises consist of firing small patches of land (10 acres and less) in increments of 30 minutes. Type 1 Hand Crews will construct hand lines using hand tools to remove surface vegetation. Engine Crews will conduct progressive hose lays which will not involve cutting of vegetation. Fire apparatus will be operated from pre-existing roads/motorways and previously graded surfaces to pump water for the progressive hose lays. No heavy equipment will be operated off pre-existing road/ motorways or on previously undisturbed soil surfaces. Directed aerial water drops will be made by helicopter pilots utilizing air to ground communication with ground personnel.

This project fits under Class 4 Categorical Exemption described in CCR 14 15304 pertaining to minor alterations to land. A limited environmental review conducted by the County of Los Angeles Fire Department staff foresters confirmed that no exceptions apply which would preclude the use of a Notice of Exemption for this project and determined that no significant impacts would occur. Documentation of the environmental review is on file at the County of Los Angeles Fire Department's Natural Resource Section Vegetation Management Unit in Pacoima.
