Document Description
28.36 miles of roads in the Santa Lucia Preserve are being treated 50 feet on either side of the road to reduce the risk of wildfire to residents and visitors to the Preserve in case of emergency egress. These roads are maintained as fuelbreaks and as primary routes for evacuation in emergencies such as wildfire. The maintenance of vegetation along these roads also provides emergency personnel an increased ability to defend homes and structures from wildfire.

Reasons for Exemption
This project is exempt because the clearing and maintenance of vegetation to 50 feet on either side of select roadways in the Santa Lucia Preserve to reduce the fire hazard to people evacuating during an emergency falls under Category 4, Section (i): Fuel management activities within 30 feet of structures to reduce the volume of flammable vegetation, provided that the activities will not result in the taking of endangered, rare, or threatened plant or animal species or significant erosion and sedimentation of surface waters. This exemption shall apply to fuel management activities within 100 feet of a structure if the public agency having fire protection responsibility for the area has determined that 100 feet of fuel clearance is required due to extra hazardous fire conditions.
