Document Description
The project consists of the transfer of fee title to the Fitzsimmons property from the Sonoma Land Trust to expand the County’s Hood Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve. The property consists of approximately 205.4 acres of natural habitat in the Mayacamas Mountains. The Fitzsimmons property straddles the ridge between Hood Mountain and Bald Mountain and is visible from the Highway 12 scenic corridor and numerous regional vantage points. The property encompasses part of the headwaters of Sonoma Creek through the Bear Creek and Golden Creek tributaries, which flow to the south. The property has historically been used for private recreation purposes including grazing cattle, horses, camping, hunting, and hiking.
Acquiring this property helps expand a vast block of remaining wildlands in the highly subdivided southern Mayacamas, connecting Hood Mountain with Bald Mountain. The purpose of the acquisition is to preserve the open space values of the property, provide additional trails, protect natural resources and the wilderness experience provided at the Park, and offer a near-wilderness recreational experience close to population centers. The Grant Deed will restrict the Fitzsimmons Property to general park use. The County may replace or reconstruct existing fences and gates, provide minor fuel management and debris removal, conduct limited habitat restoration, maintain the existing access, and provide for interim public use to the property.
