The existing Calaveritas Road Bridge would be rehabilitated and strengthened via the following:
Major components of the truss (chords, floor beams and cross girders) will be disassembled and strengthened in a specialized :fabrication shop offsite. To strengthen the top chord, a supplemental steel tube section (HSS) member will be added within the hollow section of the top chord. Additional gusset plates will be installed behind the existing gusset plate to tie the top chord to the other truss members. To strengthen the top chord, bottom chord, and diagonal members, existing rivets that are corroded and/or undersized will be removed and replaced with new upsized rivets to increase structural capacity. The cross girders beneath the bridge deck, which have corroded and undersized members, will be strengthened by welding or bolting plates to the top and bottom flanges of the beams. Once strengthened, cleaned and painted, the truss components will be brought back to the site and reassembled.
