Document Description
SDSU proposes to renovate, and expand by approximately 68,000 gross square feet, the existing Aztec Recreation Center. With the expansion, the Aztec Recreation Center would be two stories in height and total 142,000 gross square feet. The purpose is to improve and expand student recreation and fitness facilities on campus; the expanded facility would include additional indoor sports court space, enhanced food service and meeting spaces, and expanded locker room facilities. The renovation and expansion would be constructed on the site of the existing Aztec Recreation Center. The proposed project would be located on the site of the existing Aztec Recreation Center in the western portion of the main SDSU campus at the corner of 55th Street and Aztec Walk, in the College Area Community Planning Area within the City of San Diego, County of San Diego.

Reasons for Exemption
The proposed project involves expansion of an existing recreational facility with no change of land use, consistent with the SDSU Campus Master Plan (the applicable plan); is located on a project site of no more than 5 acres in size that is substantially surrounded by urban uses with no value as habitat for endangered, rare or threatened species; would not result in any significant effects to traffic, noise, air quality, or water quality; and can be adequately served by all required utilities and public services. The proposed project would not include an increase in student enrollment or faculty/staff. It can be seen with certainty that there is no possibility that the proposed project may have a significant environmental effect. The proposed project involves the partial reconstruction and renovation of an existing recreational facility with no change of use. There are no unusual circumstances surrounding the proposed project and no reasonable possibility of a significant effect.
