Document Description
UC Davis proposes to construct an agricultural buffer and open space improvements between the West Village Neighborhood and the Teaching and Research fields in West Campus. At the western edge of the West Village Neighborhood, the buffer will run north/south along the length of the Teaching and Research fields. A meandering gravel pathway will be constructed within the buffer for use by maintenance vehicles and pedestrians. The path will connect to the Russell Boulevard bike path. The project involves fencing, access gates, landscaping, excavation, and temporary irrigation to establish new native plants and trees.
Along the northern edge, adjacent to Russell Blvd, a soil borrow site is proposed to be operational for five years, excavating high quality soil to be used for landscaping soil on campus capital projects. The soil borrow site would be fenced and up to three acres on the western side of the northern edge. The borrow pit may be expanded to the remaining area along the northern edge in the future under a separate approval. Upon completion of soil harvesting activities, the soil borrow site will be contoured to form the new stormwater basin and the area will be vegetated with native shrubs, trees, and grasses. The borrow site will be managed by UC Davis Facilities Management and the Arboretum and Public Garden staff. The site will be accessed as needed by UC Davis staff and contractors to collect and transport soil for UC Davis construction projects on campus already underway. The site will open when needed during normal daytime construction hours.
