Document Description
California State Lands Commission (CSLC) proposes to abandon and remediate legacy wells on the beach below the bluff at Lookout Park in Summerland, Santa Barbara County. These are legacy oil wells dating back to the 1890s and early 1900s and are known to leak oil. CSLC staff conducted an assessment of the Becker Well in fall 2015 (Phase 1) and developed an engineering work plan to properly abandon the well, which was Phase 2 of the project. The Becker well abandonment work was successfully completed in March 2018. The Commission action is to authorize CSLC staff to solicit proposals and hire a contractor to abandon other legacy wells in a method similar to the method used to abandon the Becker well.
