Document Description
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Recovery Plan for western lily (Lilium occidentale) (1998) lists secondary succession as a principle reason for decline of lily populations throughout its restricted range. The CDFG, in cooperation with the Service, seeks to improve and manage critical habitat for this State and federally endangered species. Until about 10 years ago, the CCM supported more than 75% of the total reproductive population for the species. In 1991, the largest known population of this species was discovered at the CCMWA. In 1997, the number of plants was estimated at 2,660 individuals; however, since 2006, this population has declined to less than 50% of the previous estimate (USFWS 2009), and the lily has disappeared entirely from the lowest elevations of the marsh.
