Document Description
The Saddleback College Science Math Building Project site is 2.59 acres and includes the Science Math Building and surrounding areas east of Parking Lot 10, south of Library Road, and directly west of the Learning Resource Center (LRC). It also includes the pedestrian bridge that crosses Library Road from the Science Math Plaza that is on the east side of the Science Math Building.
Consistent with the 2011 Facilities Master Plan, the Project would replace the existing aged Science Math Building facilities with new modern facilities that would meet current and future student and faculty needs. However, instead of extensive renovation of the existing 81,420 GSF building, the proposed Project will demolish the existing building and develop a new LEED Gold Equivalent three-story approximately 50,000 GSF building that will provide 32,500 ASF. The new building will be approximately 31,420 GSF smaller than the renovated structure that was included in the 2011 FMP. The new building includes classrooms, class labs, administrative and faculty office spaces, student study areas, meeting rooms, specialized distance education spaces, and building support. The new building accommodates technology and provides more efficient use of space and energy than the existing structure that was constructed in 1974.
The proposed three-story building will be approximately 53 feet high. Level 1 will consist of approximately 17,400 GSF, Level 2 will consist of approximately 17,000 GSF, and Level 3 will consist of approximately 15,600 GSF. The new Science Math Building will be organized around a series of student study spaces that direct students between the lower level 1 building entry adjacent to Parking Lot 10 up three floors to the upper level and Science Math Plaza level that connects to other parts of the campus.
The Project will also reconstruct the existing pedestrian bridge over Library Road connecting the Science Math Plaza to the Main Campus Quad and reconstruct the approximately 35,500 SF Science Math Plaza. The new pedestrian bridge will provide universal access across Library Road with an approximately 25-foot vertical grade change.
Construction of the proposed project is anticipated to take 22-24 months. Construction of the Project includes demolition of the existing building, removal of the existing building foundation system, and 15 feet of over-excavation (approximately 49,175 cubic yards) and re-compaction of approximately 41,765 cubic yards of fill soils that are within the new building area. Construction includes export of approximately 7,410 cubic yards of soil and import of approximately 12,945 cubic yards of engineered fill.
