Document Description
HWMA is proposing to implement a regional food waste diversion program to serve Humboldt County (Figure 5 of Initial Study document). The proposed program would divert food waste (which is currently hauled an average of 190 miles and landfilled) to a local, anaerobic food waste digester facility. The aerobic digester would convert the food waste into renewable energy and fertilizer. The proposed waste diversion / energy production facility would (1) have an ultimate capacity to accept and process 60 tons per day (tpd) of source-separated food waste as well as fats, oils and grease from residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, and public partners within the community; and (2) generate electricity from methane gas produced during the digestion process to both power digester facilities and provide electricity to the Elk River Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). HWMA would be contracted by these entities to accept and haul the food waste to the digester.
