Document Description
The County of San Luis Obispo is proposing to remove and replace the existing Avila Flood Gate. The Avila Flood Gate is installed on the downstream end of a culvert that drains a large portion of the community fo Avila Beach. The existing gate is a steel "flap gate" that prevents high creek flows and/or high tides from back flowing through the culvert and flooding a portion of the community. The gate is frequently blocked open by silt, sand and debris because it opens into the tidal lagoon of San Luis Obispo Creek. The new type valve can operate under these conditions without blocking open. Work will consist of the demolition of the existing flap gate and head wall, construction of a new head wall and installation of a Red Valve Tideflex Check Valve. A semicircular sandbag diversion, approximately 8 feet in radius, will be laid by hand to protect water quality in the lagoon. Work will necessarily take place during low creek flows and low tides. The total area of disturbance is not expected to exceed 150 square feet, and a total of 2.38 cubic yards of excavation.
