Santa Clarita Housing Element Update

Description

The City of Santa Clarita (City) is preparing an update to the General Plan Housing Element. State law requires that housing elements be updated every eight years (California Government Code Sections 65580 to 65589.8). The 2021-2029 Housing Element identifies sites adequate to accommodate a variety of housing types for all income levels and needs of special population groups defined under state law (California Government Code Section 65583); analyzes governmental constraints to housing maintenance, improvement, and development; addresses conservation and improvement of the condition of existing affordable housing stock; and outlines policies that promote housing opportunities for all persons. The project involves an update to the City of Santa Clarita Housing Element as part of the sixth-cycle planning period, which spans from 2021 through 2029. The project also includes an update to the General Plan Safety Element, which is required by state law to be updated upon the next revision of the Housing Element. Areas of the Safety Element to be updated include fire hazards, stormwater management, and emergency response and preparedness, particularly as they relate to the City’s projected climate change exposure and vulnerability. The Safety Element would be updated to ensure alignment with the recently adopted 2021 Local Hazard Mitigation Plan.
