Title
Smiley Park and Camp Whittle Reforestation Project
Description
The project is located on private property known as Smiley Park Country Club Home Owner's Association and Camp Whittle. The project goal is to reforest area that were burned in the 2003 Old Fire, 2007 Butler II FIre and the 2007 Slide Fire. The project areas were previously comprised of a mixed conifer-oak forest in the San Bernardino Mountains and were significantly impacted by drought and bark beetles prior to burning. After the fires, shrub species dominated the fire areas due to the lack of conifer seed source and following years of below average rainfall. The proejct consists of tree planting within approximately 108 total acres; 53 at Smiley Park and 55 at Camp Whittle. Approximately eight acres will be planted in Smiley Park in the spring of 2017 and additional acres may be planted in future years. Exact acreage to be planted at Camp Whittle in the spring of 2017 will be determined based on tree availablity.
