Title
Rice Creek Re-alignment
Description
This project will re-route Rice Creek, an ephemeral tributary of the Ventura River, from a man-made diversion ditch and back into its historic route. In the 1920's, Rice Creek was diverted from its historic route to facilitate the installation of an orange orchard. The diverted stream was substantially shortened, confined by levees, and discharged over a 30 foot cliff into the Ventura River floodplain. The orange orchard has been retired and partially removed. Replacing the stream to its historic route will re-wet 2,900 feet of the historic channel. Revegetation will enhance and expand riparian habitats for the benefit of birds and wildlife. Rice Creek is a seasonal drainage and will be dry during construction.
