Description
This proposed Project involves a one-time, short-term borrow pit in direct support of CA Department of Transportation (Caltrans) widening project on the nearby SR 46. In April 2010, grading and excavation began under a County grading permit, and following a Notice to Comply issued by the Department of Conservation, Office of Mining Reclamation, Project activities were halted pending the approval of a Surface and Mining and Reclamation Plan in accordance with the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA). Approximately 90,000 cubic yards of soil have already been removed from the Project site, and an additional 60,000 cubic yards of material are planned for removal. Excavated soil will be removed within an irregular shaped strip approximately 2,600 feet in length and with a maximum width of 290 feet. Soil will be excavated to a maximum depth of 30 feet below natural grade. It is anticipated that excavation of the remaining 60,000 cubic yards of soil will take approximately 10 to 12 working days. Upon completion of excavation and grading, the areas disturbed will be re-contoured with side slopes of 5:1 (horizontal:vertical) or flatter, and then drill seeded.
