Garnet Mine-Granite Construction Remediation of Coachella Valley Water District Property
Description
The California Department of Fish and Game is issuing an Agreement regarding the Lake or Streambed Alteration to the Project Applicant, the Granite Construction Company. The Applicant is proposing to perform reclamation work on Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) property within the Whitewater River wash. Activities include removal of debris stockpiles in accordance with the approved reclamation plan dated April 3, 2003. Other reclamation activities include removal of a 500 foot berm extending southeast, filling in a depression area along the north CVWD property line, and smoothing a corner of the existing berm on Granite property located on the northwest corner of the site. Total amount of material is approximately 11,000 tons. The material will be loaded (by front end loader) into haul trucks and removed from the property for use as fill in the construction the approved reclamation berm on Granite property. Clean native material will be used to fill the depression area along the north CVWD property line as Phase 1 mining continues. These activities are designed to improve the overall functional capacity of the Whitewater River. Stockpiled material will be removed down to existing grade of riverbed. Approximately 17.80 acres of the project site are within a region considered jurisdictional by the Department; the project will result in 8 acres of permanent impact.
