Title
Spanish Creek at Kellett's Restoration Project
Description
The California Department of Fish and Game is executing Lake or Streambed Alteration Agreement number 1600-2008-0052-R2, pursuant to Section 1602 of the Fish and Game Code to the project applicant, Feather River Coordinated Resource Management. The Spanish Creek - Kellet's Restoration Project proposes to restore approximately 1,663 foot section of Spanish Creek to prevent property loss and risk or damage to the county road crossing from stream channel migration and excessive bedload deposition, and improve water quality on-site and downstream. Project objectives include: reduce deposition of bedload material within the project area; improve water and sediment flow through the county road crossing; reduce or eliminate loss of property by reconstructing the exaggerated channel bend and protecting it with rock vanes and vegetation transplants; and improve conditions of water flow by reconnecting the stream channel to its floodplain. The following actions are proposed to meet the project objectives: 1) Reconstruct approximately 200 feet of rapidly eroding streambank to a configuration that evenly distributes the stresses of turning water flows. 2) Keep the center of stream flows (thalweg) away from the reconstructed bank by constructing 4 boulder vanes to floodplain elevation and heavily vegetate the upper bank with transplanted material. 3) Remove 4 large gravel berms, less than 1000 cubic yards, from .73 ac in the active floodplain.
