County Public Works - San Simeon Creek Road Bridges Replacement Project and Development Plan/Coastal Development Permit ED06-154 (DRC2005-00273)

Description

The proposed Project would consist of replacing 2 existing bridges along San Simeon Creek Road that are in danger of being structurally unsound. The existing bridges would remain in place while new bridges are being built within ~5 to 10 ft of the existing bridges. A diversion system would be installed in the creek to bypass stream flow during construction, and falsework would be built in the stream channel to facilitate construction. Portions of the stream bank would be excavated to accommodate new concrete abutments that would be poured in place. At the downstream bridge, an existing concrete pier would be removed from the active stream channel, while the cover and habitat afforded by that pier would be replaced by installing several boulders ~8 tons in size. Vegetation may be cut and trimmed to allow access to both bridge sites. At the downstream bridge, 0.9 acres of temporary impact and 0.6 acres of permanent impact would occur, while at the upstream bridge, 0.5 acres each of temporary and permanent impact would occur. The site would be revegetated including installation of willows and other vegetation among the rock slope protection (RSP). Upon completion of the new bridges, the existing bridges would be removed, including concrete abutments, and the RSP would be installed to protect the abutments. Equipment to be used includes backhoes, excavators, cranes, cement trucks, and similar construction equipment. Access to each bridge would be via existing roads, and no new roads would be built to access the sites.
