Title
Injection of Calcium Polysulfide to Remediate Hexavelant Chromium in Groundwater and Soil, Torrance
Description
Exxon Mobil operates a refinery, including a tank farm and distribution facility, on 750 acres in the City of Torrance. Regular monitoring required under Cleanup and Abatement Orders (CAO) 85-17, 89-136 and 95-116, detected chromium VI in 2000. Characterization of the 350 x 150 foot area with 56 cores, penetrometer tests or wells found Chromium VI levels as high as 200 mg/L in the groundwater and 95.9 mg/kg in the soil. Exxon Mobil proposed remediation using injection of Calcium Polysulfide which reduces the chromium VI into the non-toxic chromium III in the soil and groundwater underlying at about 70 feet.
