Title
Irvine Lake Pipeline (ILP) Disinfection Facility
Description
The Irvine Lake Pipeline (ILP) conveys untreated water from the Irvine Lake to the various customers for irrigation use, and it also supplies the Serrano Water District (SWD) with raw water for treatment into potable water. To control slime buildup inside the pipeline, IRWD has in the past injected chlorine into the ILP at head end of the pipeline at Irvine Lake. However, while the practice was effective in controlling slime buildup, injection of free chlorine into untreated water from the lake also produced trihalomethane (THM) as a byproduct. IRWD was requested by SWD to relocate the disinfection injection point downstream of the SWD intake line to avoid forming THM in its potable water system. The disinfection facility would be relocated to an existing filter building adjacent to the ILP on the southerly side of Irvine Park. IRWD will use sodium hypochlorite (common bleach) as the disinfectant for its safety characteristics. The major components of the disinfection facility are the sodium hypochlorite storage and pumping equipment and the structures to house the equipment. Metering pumps will be located inside the existing filter building, the storage tanks will be located at the back of the building in a concrete spill containment with an overhead metal canopy.
