Title
Field Demonstration and Validation of a New Device for Measuring Groundwater and Solute Fluxes, Naval Base Ventura County, Port Hueneme Facility, Port Hueneme..
Description
With Regional Board oversight, the U.S. Navy (Navy) and the University of Florida plan to conduct an 18-month field demonstration and validation of a new in-well device to measure groundwater and solute fluxes. During the evaluation process, the in-well device will release a number of alcohol tracers, with a maximum mass of 618 grams. The alcohols are expected to be transformed to harmless compounds by biological process. Groundwater sampling will ensure that no adversely impacted groundwater migrates down gradient. If adversely impacted groundwater were to migrate down gradient, it would be removed by a system of extraction wells installed by the Navy to contain and control the MTBE plume. The test will take place in the sandy perched aquifer, between approximately 7 and 22 feet below grade. A clay-rich aquitard zone occurs at approximately 22 feet below grade, immediately below the sand. Groundwater flows to the southwest at velocities between 0.77 and 1.5 feet/day.
