Malaga Reclamation Project-Phase II

Description

The Malaga County Water District (MCWD) proposes to construct a) filtration facilities and appurtenances for tertiary filtration, b) replacement of an existing open screw pump and appurtenances, c) replacement of sludge thickening equipment, and d) installation of groundwater monitoring wells at the existing wastewater treatment plant or nearby properties. The improvements are intended to satisfy terms and conditions of the existing Waste Discharge Requirements and to improve the existing facilities to prevent potential public health and pollution problems. The existing equipment (screw pump and sludge thickener) have exceeded their projected useful lives and have declined in effeciency. The screw pump has declined to the point that repairs are no longer possible and it is no longer operated. The filtration facilities are required to complete improvements at the treatment plant necessary to satisfy existing requirements. The water levels in the disposal ponds have exceeded the required freeboard for the past two years and pose a threat to surrounding properties in the event of failure of the embankments.
