Title
Mount Home Demonstration State Forest-Pre-Commercial Thining
Description
Mount Home Demonstration State Forest staff plan on pre-commercially thining 30 acres of pine plantations, in eight small treatment units. Tree mortality from overcrowding is significant. In addition, brush competition and fuel loading has become a problem. The treatment units vary in size from 1.7 to 5.4 acres and vary in age from 30-40 years. The goal is to remove vigor trees and provide growing space for the residual trees. Vegetation will be cut, lopped and scattered, or piled and burned. All work will be conducted by hand crews using chainsaws and other hand tools. There will not be any heavy equipment used on the project and therefore only minimal ground disturbance. One treatment unit is located in a natural conifer stand with the overstory trees being about 100 years old. Only the dense clusters of small trees will be thinned in this treatment unit.
