Title
Former Sargent Industries Facility Soil Vapor Extraction Removal Action Workplan Approval
Description
This project involves the installation and operation of a Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) system which will implement cleanup of volatile organic compound (VOC)-impacted soil beneath certain parts of the Former Sargent Industries Facility. A Siol Vapor Extraction Workplan (SVE RAW) has been prepared which details cleanup procedures. The proposed removal action will involve the extraction and treatment of VOCs, including tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE), that are present in soil and soil vapor beneath facility Areas 4 and 7. Contaminated vapors will be extracted via a network of extraction wells, then routed to a central unit for treatment by a permitted compression-condensation SVE system. The objective of this interim removal action is to remove a source that is known to be impacting the groundwater beneath the site. Further investigation of other possible source areas and addressing the contaminated groundwater must be conducted before the final remedy is completed. Facility Areas 4 and 7 both mark the former locations of underground storage tanks (USTs) at the site. Two USTs were removed from Area 7 in late 1988; follolwing geophysical and soil gas surveys in the norther-central part of the site, a previously unmapped UST was removed from Area 4 in late 1997. Area 4 presently consists of an asphalt-paved parking lot/delivery area, and Area 7 comprices a concrete-paved storage area and adjacent alley. The two SVE system are small in nature, unique and separated by an alley.
