- Title
- Burbank Water Reclamation Plant Biological Nutrient Removal Upgrade
- Description
- The existing Burbank Water Reclamation Plant (BWRP) is operated to remove conventional pollutants, such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and is not specifically sized or configured to remove nutrients. The primary objective of upgrading the BWRP is to reduce the discharge of nutrients, enabling the facility to meet new effluent standards issued by the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) commencing June 2002. Nutrient limits are being established through the total maximum daily load (TMDL) assessment of water quality needs. The pollutants of immediate concern to the BWRP is to incorporate natural biological processes (nitrification and denitrification) that will allow near-term standards to be met by modifying existing units rather than construction of new facilities. The second objective of the BWRP upgrade is to increase automation throughout the plant. Planned improvements would provide the necessary control equipment to meet this goal. The third and final objective is to increase safety and plant reliability by replacing old equipment with updated machinery, converting from gaseous chlorine to liquid sodium hypochlorite, and providing the necessary safety and precautionary equipment.
