Document Description
The goal of this 5.0-acre project is to significantly reduce problematic weeds like Himalayan blackberry and Arundo donax along a reach of Gordon Slough and replace them with diverse native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers. Gordon Slough is an important corridor for wildlife that extends from the Cache Creek Nature Preserve and contains high quality oak and riparian woodland habitat, but which has a significant understory of woody and herbaceous invasive plants. Most of these woody plants will be mechanically removed from the 3.7- acre project site, which will also have the co-benefit of reducing fire risk for the rental home just south of the project site. A wide range of wildlife species will benefit from restoring the two project sites along the slough, including resident and migratory vertebrates that rely on native plants as cover and food sources, and invertebrates that will use the native plants for pollen, nectar, and as larval hosts. The project will engage young adults, career trainees, local high school students, and mentors from the community to accomplish the weed management and planting implementation through the use of crews from the California Conservation Corps, as well as student volunteers and mentors from the Center for Land-Based Learning's SLEWS Program.
