Document Description
The project proposes to remove, replace, or repair predator proof infrastructure within Benbow Lake State Recreation Area to provide safe food storage for park visitors as well as reduce unwanted encounters with wildlife. One of two installation methods (to be determined on-site) will be used to replace approximately 70 wooden food lockers with metal, "predator proof" food lockers, designed to meet ADA compliance requirements. At 20 sites, work will: • Use hand tools and/or mechanical gas-powered auger or backhoe-mounted auger to dig an approx. 12-inch-wide by 2-feet-deep hole; • Use U-bolts to attach a 3.5-inch diameter pole to a locker, and place the post into the hole; • Backfill around the post with concrete to secure; and • Cover with native soils (excavation spoils) and/or surrounding duff. At 50 sites, work will: • Hand excavate up to 2-inches to level the surface, or bring in fill to create a level surface; • Pour a 4-foot by 5-foot by 6-inch-deep slab of concrete; and • Use four (4) bolts to secure the food locker to the concrete slab.
