Document Description
California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) proposes a small habitat restoration project to replace two highway culverts with full-span bridges on State Route (SR) 1 in Mendocino County at Post Mile (PM) 4.64 and PM 58.78 to remediate anadromous fish passage barriers. High water velocities in the culverts during moderate and high flows, lack of depth within the culverts during low flows, and the perched culvert outlets contribute to the barrier status of the culverts for juvenile and adult anadromous fish. The two locations were identified as high priority in a 2005 evaluation of fish passage barriers conducted in collaborations by Caltrans, Cal Poly Humboldt, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, National Marine Fisheries Service, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
