Document Description
The Doran Regional Park Monterrey Cypress Removal project will selectively remove approximately 20, small (14” dbh or less) Monterrey cypress (Calitopsis macrocarpa) trees to maintain native vegetation and plant and animal communities. The goal of the project is to maintain native dune habitat for western snowy plover, a small shoreline bird that forages and nests in dune and beach habitat. Plover eggs and chicks can be predated by ravens, skunks and racoon that use the cypress trees as perches or cover. Removing this non-native vegetation will support and enhance native dune habitat. Regional Parks will attempt to reuse salvageable material from the cypress tree removals. Large, scenic, healthy cypress trees will be retained.
