JOC 2024 BRIDGE DECK SEALS
Project Description
Project Location:
East Frontage Road Bridge No. 29C-069, Flood Road Bridge No. 29C-105, Tracy Boulevard Bridge No. 29C-320, Oro Avenue Bridge No. 29C-338, Drais Avenue Bridge No. 29C-350, Bethany Road Bridge No. 29C-421, Mariposa Road Bridge No. 29C-451, Wildwood Road Bridge No. 29C-469, Lower Sacramento Road Bridge No. 29C-430. See attached Vicinity Map.
Project Justification:
There are numerous concrete bridges throughout the County, due to wear and tear, vehicle loads and weathering result in cracking on the concrete surface or deck. These deficiencies if not maintained can lead to spalling or corrosion of the reinforcing steel. To remediate this situation, a methacrylate resin (deck seal) is recommended as a preventative maintenance measure.
Through the State inspection report, Caltrans has identified nine bridges with concrete surface cracking and recommend treating these with deck seal to seal all cracks and prevent further water and moisture from penetrating and corroding the reinforcing steel. Surface defects range from worn off chip seal to pattern cracking between 4 inches to 1 foot in transverse direction and longitudinal cracking from 1/32 inch to 1/8 inch wide and up to 20 feet long. There are no records of these bridges ever being treated with methacrylate in the past. The existing pavement has heavy alligator and edge cracking throughout the project limits.
Scope of Work:
The project will consist of:
1.Removing existing Chip Seal from three (3) bridge decks.
2.Removing Thermoplastic Striping and paint from all nine (9) bridge locations (lead abatement to be performed if necessary).
3.Sealing bridge decks at all nine (9) bridge locations with methacrylate or approved equal.
Environmental Setting:
In these portions of the San Joaquin County, land usage varies, though primarily rural with single family homes.
There are many large trees adjacent to the project area. Nesting and migratory birds, protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, may nest within these trees. Furthermore, the Swainson’s Hawk, a raptor species of concern within the State of California and listed as threatened may nest adjacent to or within the project area. A pre-construction survey for nesting Swainson’s Hawks and other migratory birds is recommended if construction is scheduled to occur from February 15th to September 1st.
Beneficiaries:
The public will see increased safety and fewer hazards with these well-maintained bridges. Overall, there will be reduced maintenance concerns and more reliability within the project areas.
