Document Description
The purpose of this project was to repair storm damage to the creek and associated small infrastructure in the Bird Creek riparian area in Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area to allow for public use of the area. Significant bank erosion occurred due to high water flows during the winter of 2022, and similar flows without repair could have caused further, more significant damage. Work used heavy equipment and State Parks staff to:
Remove all man-made materials from bridge, concrete retaining wall, and trash from creek; Trim back vegetation and clear logs and natural material clogging the creek channel; Bring in native soil from existing stockpiles to fill in eroded creek banks; Use equipment to establish smooth sloping creek channel sides; Lay down filter fabric; and Armor creek sides with granite rip-rap rocks no larger than 3-ft in diameter.
