Document Description
The project includes hand installation of biomimicry tools (4-foot sand fencing and 12-inch cedar shims) and native dune plants to facilitate sand deposition and create dune habitat, symbolic fencing and signage to minimize unauthorized encroachment, and public communication and outreach to encourage the public to provide space for native habitat growth. These biomimicry/green engineering techniques propose to restore coastal dune habitat at three different Oceanside beaches, totaling one collective acre: Harbor Beach (0.53 acre), North The Strand (0.07 acre), and San Luis Rey River mouth (0.76 acre). The dunes will be restored in phases, with the first phase beginning at Harbor Beach (expected fall 2025), followed by the San Luis Rey River and North The Strand dune locations. By and large, each dune will aim to be installed in fall to take advantage of natural rainfall. Project monitoring includes measuring beach topography and vegetative cover over time to evaluate if the project is successful at retaining beach sand and establishing native dune vegetation and will commence after the dune restoration installation is complete at each location, and will be continued through 2028.
