Document Description
A critical aspect of our Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) responsibilities is for the Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA) to maintain and improve groundwater levels, as groundwater levels are declining in this area. With the decline in available surface water deliveries to irrigators, it is critical to find water supplies to rebuild the aquifer. The GSA is proposing a managed aquifer recharge project for maintaining groundwater sustainability in the Shasta Valley. Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) projects such as the Shasta Westside Recharge Project are a Project and Management Action (PMA) identified in the Shasta River Groundwater Sustainability Plan (Shasta GSP). The GSA is applying for a 180 Day Temporary permit to divert high flows from the Shasta River for recharge from the Grenada Irrigation District (GID). The primary and beneficial use goal is to improve groundwater resources and levels for rural and domestic groundwater users, particularly maintaining levels in shallow wells. Groundwater levels have been impacting residential users in the Grenada and Gazelle area due to drought and a decrease in surface water irrigation within the region. The GSA will be taking the lead but working with GID to divert during the period of December 1 to March 31, utilizing the existing GID point of diversion and distribution infrastructure to strategically flood irrigate parcels within the GID jurisdiction. Diversion will be limited to periods where Shasta River is flowing at greater than the historic 90th percentile daily flowrate and will be less than 20 percent of the river flow and limited to the 40 cfs capacity of the GID diversion. The GSA has used DWR funded grant money to equip wells in the area to gather baseline groundwater elevations and will continue to monitor those locations for the foreseeable future. These baseline levels will be beneficial for evaluating and measuring the amount of water recharged into the localized aquifer.
