Document Description
Project will install new culverts at two (2) locations along Howland Road in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park to alleviate the possibility to road collapse due to water sheeting across the road during extreme weather events. At the site of each culvert replacement work will:
• Divert upstream water, if necessary, to eliminate saturation of the proposed work area;
• Survey for and, if necessary, relocate any amphibians;
• Excavate a trench down to expose the existing culvert and remove the old pipe;
• Excavate to widen the trench and remove prior deposited sediment and set a new, large culvert pipe;
• Backfill and compact materials, in 6-in. lifts, over the new pipe to proper road height and gradient;
• At the inlet, install appropriately sized rock slope protection;
• Grade road surface to achieve drainage to the inboard inlet and head wall; and
• Install compact aggregate on the road surface and mulch on roadside disturbed areas.
