Document Description
The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians (Tribe) which is federally recognized, is the conduct fuel reduction and reforestation activities within a 722-acre area in Tuolumne County, California. Of this 722-acre area approximately 632 is owned in fee by the Tribe and 80 acres is held in federal trust. The project would be broadcast burn 120 acres while 60 acres of fuels reduction would be performed using mechanical mastication and hand tools. In addition, approximately 2,000 Ponderosa Pine saplings would be planed on 40 acres to accelerate reforestation efforts. The primary goal of the project is to create a fuel-break system within strategic areas to enhance the wildfire suppression capabilities on the Murphy Ranch property and provide buffers to prevent the spread of wildfire onto nearby populated areas, including the Tribe's trust lands to the northwest and the township of Tuolumne to the west.

Reasons for Exemption
The following presents information in support of filing a Class 4 Categorical Exemption pursuant to CEQA Guidelines Section 15304 (i)) for Minor Alterations to land. Section 15304 (i)) Class exempts fuel management activities from detailed environmental review for minor public or private alterations in the condition of land, water, and/or vegetation that do not involve removal of healthy, mature, scenic trees except for forestry and agricultural purposes. The proposed project is not subject to any of the exceptions pursuant to CEQA Guidelines Section 15300.2.
