Document Description
Conduct prescribed fire burns on approximately 576 acres in Humboldt Redwoods State Park to assist with forest and prairie restoration, return fire as a natural process and to reduce wildfire risk by restoring pre-Euroamerican fuel conditions near the watershed boundaries. Preparation for containment of this and other prescribed burns is ongoing and includes cutting ladder fuels such as trees and shrubs, using hand-tools to reduce invasive plants, and building handlines. An integrated approach to invasive plant management will be employed using a variety of treatment types such as mechanical/manual, cultural, and chemical treatments to manage, control, or eradicate non-native plant species as feasible. Preparation will not produce ground disturbance deeper than 1-in. and handlines will be remediated post-burn by pulling any scraped vegetation back across the handline to inhibit use by the public. No heavy equipment will be utilized during preparation or during project activities. Four (4) culverts located within the project area and one (1) just outside the project area along Pole Line Road will be covered with fire shelters and/or have all adjacent vegetation removed to protect them from damage during firing operations. All bridges, wooden structures (such as picnic tables) and bathrooms along Homestead Trail and within the Hamilton Barn Environmental camp will have approximately 2-ft of handline and cleared vegetation surrounding them to protect them from damage during firing operations. Ignition operations near the Marion House will have a large engine
