Document Description
The Project will conduct maintenance repairs to the existing pier situated in the waterfront community of Inverness within Tomales Bay (Bay) (38.103734; -122.856373). The pier is composed of three elements: inner pier, causeway, and pierhead. Pier components that are degraded and need in-kind replacement include the pier joists, girders, and posts. No work will occur on the inner pier, any of the floating docks or gangways, the race shed nor the windscreen wall.
Project repair activities will include the following:
1. A temporary work platform will be installed below the pier decking for construction access and supported by the existing piles. Work platforms will be present in place on onlyfone section of the work area at a time. At no time will there be more than 150 square feet (sq ft) of temporary platform present in one place. Brackets will be attached to the existing piles and untreated wood or aluminum planks (typically 2 by 12-inch piles) will be placed on top to provide a work platform. The temporary platform will be installed from a small vessel at tides high enough to avoid any contact with the Bay Floor. A floating debris boom and containment tarp will also be installed below the work area to capture any loose sediment or debris.
2. All pressure treated Douglas fir wood girders and posts above the concrete piles and under the pierhead and causeway will be removed and replaced. The joists and decking will be raised by jacks a few inches in sections for work to occur. A new stainless steel pile cap will be applied to the existing concrete piles. Cutting of the posts and girders will occur onshore and will include 550 linear feet of girders, 79 posts, and associated stainless hardware replacements. Non-treated wood and materials will be used for the pier repairs and work activities will occur during low tide periods.
3. The existing, 128 square foot (sq ft) storage shed located on the pierhead will be dismantled by hand, removed in pieces, and then disposed at an appropriate offsite facility. All work will be completed by hand with powered hand tools.
