Document Description
The City of Kerman receives 100 percent of its potable water supply from the underlying San Joaquin Valley Groundwater Basin. The water quality from the City's wells contains 1,2,3 Trichloropropane, Arsenic, Uranium, and Hexavalent Chromium in concentrations that exceed the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL). The City has two outstanding compliance orders for exceedances of Uranium and TCP. The recently adopted hexavalent chromium MCL will place all of the City's wells out of compliance this year or next year. The City would like to conduct a feasibility study to determine the preferred solution to address the hexavalent compliance. Consolidation is not feasible for the City of Kerman because there are no other water systems nearby capable of supplying the volume of water that the City needs. The project proposed in this application includes the following: (1) conduct a hydrogeological investigation to determine the extent of the hexavalent chromium plume and study the feasibility of drilling new water supply wells outside of the affected area. Initiate contacts with nearby property owners and irrigation districts to discuss any concerns; (2) conduct a pilot test of hexavalent chromium technologies to determine the most feasible technology and the actual cost to operate and maintain such treatment;
(3) conduct a pilot test of arsenic removal technologies and determine the feasibility of drilling wells deeper to avoid the hexavalent chromium; (4) prepare life-cycle costs of the various alternatives and prepare a recommendation.
