Document Description
The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District proposes to manage an overpopulation of ground squirrels at Bear Creek Stables within Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. The Project would protect public health and safety and support continued use and maintenance of the stables and associated facilities. Control of ground squirrels could involve a combination of exclusion, securing food sources attracting and supporting ground squirrels, trapping, and euthanasia. All trapping would be completed by a licensed and certified trapper as defined by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and consistent with protocols established by District natural resources staff. Traps specifically designed for ground squirrels would be used and would be monitored daily, and non-targeted species would be released. Captured ground squirrels would be euthanized off-site using carbon dioxide as outlined by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Traps would remain onsite until ground squirrel population has been reduced by =70%.
