Document Description
Maintenance dredging is proposed at the entrance channel to a design depth of -20 feet mean lower low water (MLLW), plus 2 feet of overdredge allowance. The total volume of material proposed for dredging is estimated to be approximately 411,000 cubic yards (cy), consisting of approximately 300,000 cy above design depth and 111,000 cy of allowable overdredge volume. Dredged material will be characterized to determine suitability for beach nourishment or nearshore placement at Peninsula Beach. Peninsula Beach is located adjacent to the entrance channel on a spit between the Pacific Ocean and Alamitos Bay (Figure 2). If suitable, sediment from the entrance channel would be hydraulically dredged and placed at Peninsula Beach to create a wider, gently sloping beach profile. Dredging is needed to maintain adequate navigational depths for boater recreation and access.

15301, 15304
Reasons for Exemption
Class 1 includes maintenance of existing public facilities involving negligible or no expansion of existing or former use. The project would be exempt as it would involve dredging activities as part of the operation and maintenance of the existing Entrance Channel, and would not expand existing use. Class 4 consists of minor public or private alterations in the condition of land, water, and/or vegetation which do not involve removal of healthy, mature, scenic trees except for forestry and agricultural purposes. Stabilization of shorelines in areas that are not environmentally sensitive is also included in this item. The project would be exempt per Subsection (g) Maintenance dredging where the spoil is deposited in a spoil area authorized by all applicable state and federal regulatory agencies.
