Document Description
The Coachella Valley History Museum has partnered with the Indio Water Authority for the Gardens and Railway Project. This Project will encompass a 15,000 square foot area in the northeast corner of the Coachella Valley History Museum campus that will feature an array of drought-tolerant desert gardens along with an immersive and interactive railway exhibit that will prominently feature a former Southern Pacific Train Car. The Gardens will feature a variety of drought-tolerant desert demonstration garden and include community gardens that will welcome community and school groups to grow seasonal vegetables and experience educational opportunities. The demonstration gardens will be professionally designed to depict the beauty the desert has to offer and to bring awareness to our need to preserve our limited resource water. The Railway portion will feature a Southern Pacific Train Car with virtual and interactive capabilities that will allow a person to be transported to a time when the railway was the premier mode of transportation. Through current and developing technological capabilities, the Museum seeks to create virtual trips to places around the world. The Railway Exhibit Hall will depict the vital importance the railroads played in the establishment and development of our valley. The Desert Submarine will allow you to immerse yourself in the early cooling system developed to allow workers to survive the extreme desert heat. This will be a scaled replica of the current Desert Submarine that is on display on the museum grounds
