Document Description
On December 20, 2022, at 0234 hours, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake occurred 8 miles WSW of Ferndale, Humboldt County. The earthquake caused widespread damage throughout Humboldt County, including substantial damage to the Eel River Bridge (Fernbridge)–Bridge No. 04-0134. A second earthquake occurred on January 01, 2023, causing additional pressure to the bridge and documented damage throughout Humboldt County. Smaller aftershocks of the earthquakes continued throughout the area. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) issued an Emergency Director’s Order to restore SR 211. This project is needed to prevent or mitigate loss or impairment of life, health, property, and essential public services. State Route (SR) 211 at Fernbridge is the only state highway and primary arterial route to the town of Ferndale.
