The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has executed Lake and Streambed Alteration Agreement EPIMS Notification No. EPIMS-LAN-49497-R5, pursuant to Section 1602 of the Fish and Game Code to Los Angeles Waterkeeper. The Project is limited to the cleanup and removal of trash and debris from North Atwater Park and nearby Los Angeles River. Volunteers assisting Los Angeles Waterkeeper will implement the cleanup efforts, and all trash and debris removal will only be done by hand. The cleanup event will take place on April 20, 2024. Volunteers are given safety instructions that include approved areas to access, biological resource protection, instructions on work to be done, and instructions on how to properly dispose of hazardous material. It is anticipated that the cleanup effort will last approximately two (2) hours; however, if the site is in need of extra stewardship, cleanup efforts may persist for up to six (6) hours. This Agreement does not authorize the removal of any vegetation, nor does it authorize the use of mechanical equipment within the Los Angeles River. Before the cleanup efforts begin at a site, a Qualified Biologist shall talk to the participants and cover any and all environmental concerns with an emphasis on avoiding nesting birds.
