Document Description
The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), pursuant to authority granted under California Code of Regulations (CCR), Title 22, Division 4.5, Chapter 20, Sec. 66270.61, has issued an Emergency Permit to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, (EPA ID# CA4890008986) to treat hazardous wastes through a controlled reaction with chemical solutions. The following chemicals must be stabilized prior to transport to an authorized hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facility: Eight (8) containers of Potassium, two (2) containers of Benzoyl Peroxide, one (1) container of 2,2-Azobis (2-Methylpropionitrile), one (1) container of 4,4-Azobis (4-Cyanovaleric Acid), two (2) containers of Sodium Azide, one (1) container of 2-Methoxy Ethanol, one (1) container of Butyl Methacrylate, one (1) container of Triethyl Orthoformate, one (1) container of Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether, one (1) container of Dibenzyl Ether, one (1) container of 2-Ethoxyethanol, one (1) container of 2-Vinylpyridine, one (1) container of 4-Vinylpyridine, one (1) container of Acrylic Acid, and one (1) container of Acryloyl Chloride. These chemicals are currently being stored at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory located at 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, California. DTSC has determined as a safety precaution to prevent an accident or severe injury, an Emergency Permit should be issued to chemically stabilize the hazardous wastes prior to storage and eventual transportation off-site by Clean Harbors Environmental Services.
