Capri Drive Emergency Sewer Repair and Replacement

The project is to replace an approx. 20-foot-long segment of existing 8 inch Vitrified Clay Pipe (VCP) with a segment of 8 inch Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipe, placed in a steel casing that traverses an approx. 12 foot wide drainage channel near Capri Drive in Vista, CA. The original construction of the pipe in 1978 included concrete encasement of the pipe, approximately 18 inches below the flowline of the channel. However, over time the channel bed has eroded and undermined the bedding of the heavy concrete encasement, causing excess sheer stress on the brittle pipe material which has manifested into interior pipe cracking. Routine sewer system maintenance uncovered signs of damage within the pipe at the drainage channel crossing, and an approx. 360 gallons sewage spill occurred in the channel as result of the cleaning operation. A temporary bypass and repairs were established, but to prevent complete failure of the sewer and discharge of additional sewage into the waterway, immediate replacement and encasement of the sewer pipe is necessary before the next rain event. The steel encasement will be anchored into the side slope of the channel with concrete anchor blocks in a manner that will “bridge” the channel allowing water to pass safely under the pipe. Additionally, medium size rocks will be strategically placed to protect the concrete anchors and side slopes from future erosion. The emergency repair work does not increase the capacity of the sewer system and will be constructed in a manner that will not alter the shape, capacity, or drainage characteristics of the channel.
