Document Description
The Alameda County Public Works Agency owns and maintains Palomares Road (Rd) in the Unincorporated Castro Valley. Due to heavy rains during the 2022-2023 winter season, a roadway embankment adjacent to 27523 Palomares Rd and at Mile Marker (MM) 1.65 collapsed. Subsequently, the southbound lane was closed to vehicular traffic due to the road failure and safety. The repair will consist of the removal and disposal of approximately 35 cubic yards of soil and asphalt materials, clearing and grubbing the slide area, installing a 135-foot-long I-beam retaining wall, backfilling the wall, installing a concrete barrier and connecting it to the existing guardrail, re-striping the road and replacing signage. All construction work would be within the existing right of way and would involve repairs only to the existing road and failed embankment. Traffic controls will be implemented during the project to manage vehicular and bicycle traffic. Best Management Practices (BMPs) will be installed during the project to prevent stormwater pollution and to control sediment loss and erosion. Disturbed areas would be hand broadcast seeded at the end of the project using a native seed mix. The purpose of the project is to restore the roadway and re-open the closed lane for vehicle use.
